2007 for me has been a year full of movies, with the highest number of movies I watched in a year. Moving to Pune and leading a “hostelier” lifestyle has increased (and improved) my affinity to films. I watched too many films and in every possible way – theaters, CDs, DVDs, and the best of all was in Neeta Volvo while traveling Mumbai to Pune and back on weekends. To begin with, I was quite impressed with “A Life in a Metro” the way it presented things was quite shocking – in a way a Madhur Bhandarkar style. And such a stunner from a debutant filmmaker was even more impressive. Two movies that, I guess had a good background research were “Parzania” and “Black Friday” , both very well made, based on real life stories and incidents. The next beautiful cinema work I watched was “Chak De” , and it soon faded off my “Metro” hangover, as the best movie seen till then. Amchi Marathi mulgi, Madhuri is back, and ready to thrill her fans and audiences alike with her ‘ thumke’, ‘latke’, ‘jhatke’, and so on. This ‘ ek-do-teen’ girl finds a respectable position in the elite club of Indian film industry’s dancing queens. Though I haven’t been a great fan of Madhuri Dixit, I have liked some of her movies and almost all of her dance sequences. Her perfectly swaying body and expressions aptly compliment grace, passion, excitement, confidence, and sensuality. From “Humko Aaj Kal Hai Intezaar” in “Sailaab” to “Dhak Dhak” in “Beta” and “Ek do teen” in “Tezaab” to her dance performances in “ Devdas”, “Dil to Pagal Hai” , and many others, I have liked her in all. And now “Aaja Nachle” , the movie itself is about dance and music, and Madhuri, in my opinion is a perfect pick for it, not only considering her as a dancing emblem but also looking at the character she would be playing. “Sivaji”, supposedly the costliest film ever made in India releases today. And it casts the south Indian celluloid’s biggest brand – Rajnikant. Yes, the iconic figure of the south Indian filmdom who unarguably has largest and loyal fan following. Almost every news channel has been broadcasting the ‘Rajni Phenomenon’ that has caught fire in the south. People wearing Rajni t-shirts, carrying Rajni handkerchiefs, participating in contests on who can imitate Rajni the best, and so on. I saw on one the news channel people standing in huge queues to get the show tickets and the bookings are full for whole the next month already. Tickets sold in black are seeing a price tag that runs into thousands. Fans have bunked colleges, offices, and even exams to catch the superstar’s show on the first day – simply amazing. My long wait to watch a good movie in this year finally ended when I saw 'Metro' in this week. Undoubtedly, the finest movie of the year so far. The movie is adequately packed with right quantities of emotions, practical approach, stress, romance, passion, and humour. However, its not the usual ‘masala’ movie. The stories of different couples are neatly interwoven. I had also seen ‘Salaam-E-Ishq’ and I did find that both the movies run on similar themes – extra marital affairs, heart breaks, deeply in love, and so on. However, ‘Metro’ is a much bolder film with lays down things with more practicality. The actors have portrayed the characters exceptionally well, and Irfan-Konkona pair takes a major chunk of the praise.
